THE BRAND

Wherever you are, the soup of the season

The line printed in the corner of every one of our packets. 四方 — people, wherever they have gone. 四时 — the four seasons, each wanting a different pot.

The hard part of soup
was never the cooking.

In a Guangdong household, soup is the base the rest of dinner is built on. The difficulty was never the stove — it is knowing what goes in this particular pot, how much of it, and when the season calls for something else.

That knowledge sat with grandparents. By the time you are renting alone in another city, working late and ordering in, the herbalist's counter is a wall of unfamiliar names on an unfamiliar scale. You buy a bagful, use half, and find the rest gone soft months later.

問湯 does one small thing: it measures a complete formula into a packet that serves one person.

Dried ingredients for one pot, portioned on linen

THE NAME

Why 問湯

問 — to ask. How has your body been, what does this season call for, where exactly did this ingredient grow. Chinese medicine calls it consultation; anyone making soup ought to ask before they measure.

湯 — soup. The answer. It does not need to be complicated. One bowl is enough.

In English, SINIC SOUP. Sinic means “of China” — plain, no detour.

HOW WE WORK

We are strict about three things

I

Region

One ingredient, one growing region, printed on every bag. We name them because we can stand behind them.

II

Proportion

The weights are worked out, not copied. One packet is a complete formula — nothing to measure, nothing left over.

III

Drying

Goji is vacuum pulse-dried to hold its freshness. The fewer steps between field and bag, the more the ingredient tastes of itself.
